The Third Decade

I

The evidenceYear after year.

Change approaches.

Though deductions differ
The direction of the data doesn’t.

Sophisticated
Mechanisms for measurement
scrutinize darkness.

II

Changes will continue to come.

Our indifference has been comprehensive.

Light disrupts the night.
Novel chemicals poison the soil,
the sea, the air, the water.

Noise is audible everywhere.

III

All of us.

The surface is paved, plowed, planted into submission.
Nothing is always clean.

Weather morphs before our eyes.

Consumption increases.

Earth looks volcanic from space again.
The night side flares with civilization,
rather than geology.
Already this area feels
like desert on sunny winter mornings.

IV

Humans might rise above
Us and them;

Above
Us and it,

Above us.
